Old Man Winter is Coming: Prepare Your Outdoor Spaces

Writer: Eric SlossEric Sloss

Preparing your outdoor space for winter is essential to protect your property and ensure a smooth transition into the colder months. Start by cleaning gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams from forming, which can cause water damage to your roof and walls. Trim back any tree branches that could break under the weight of snow or ice, as fallen limbs can damage your house, vehicles, or garden. Additionally, inspect your outdoor lighting to ensure pathways and entryways remain well-lit during the shorter days. Consider replacing any burnt-out bulbs and checking that outdoor electrical outlets are weatherproof.

Next, focus on protecting plants and landscaping. Mulch around your garden beds to insulate the soil and protect the roots of perennials, shrubs, and trees from extreme temperature fluctuations. If you have delicate plants, consider covering them with frost cloths or burlap to shield them from freezing winds and heavy snow. For potted plants, either bring them indoors or move them to a sheltered area, like a garage or shed, where they won’t be exposed to the elements.

Don’t forget to water your plants before the ground freezes, as this helps them survive during the winter months. Lastly, ensure your outdoor equipment and furniture are winter-ready. Drain hoses and store them in a dry place to prevent them from cracking. Clean and cover your patio furniture to keep it in good condition for the spring. If you have a lawnmower or other seasonal tools, perform any necessary maintenance, such as changing the oil or sharpening blades, and store them in a shed or garage. Additionally, inspect your snow removal equipment, like shovels, snow blowers, and ice melt, to ensure they’re in working order before the first snowfall. With these preparations, you’ll be ready to face the winter season with a well-maintained outdoor space.
