After a heavy snow, your pergola and yard need a little extra attention to bounce back safely and looking good. Start by dealing with snow buildup as soon as possible. Use a soft broom or roof rake to gently remove snow from the top of the pergola—never a shovel, which can damage the structure or cause injury. Pay special attention to beams and joints, since heavy, wet snow can put a lot of stress on these areas. Clearing snow early helps prevent warping, cracking, or even collapse.

Once the snow is cleared, do a quick inspection. Look for signs of damage like loose fasteners, cracked wood, bent metal, or peeling paint. If your pergola is wooden, moisture from melting snow can seep in, so it’s smart to let it dry fully and then check if it needs resealing or staining. For metal pergolas, keep an eye out for scratches or chips in the finish that could lead to rust later on. Catching small issues now can save you from bigger repairs in the spring.

Finally, turn your attention to the yard itself. Avoid walking on frozen or snow-covered grass too much, as it can compact the soil and damage the turf underneath. Once the snow melts, gently rake away any matted grass or debris to help airflow and prevent mold. If you use salt or ice melt nearby, rinse surrounding plants when temperatures allow to reduce salt damage. With a little post-snow care, your pergola and yard will be well on their way to a healthy, great-looking season ahead.
